Marked annually in Canada on April 28, the National Day of Mourning is dedicated to remembering those who have lost their lives, suffered injury or illness on the job, or experienced a work-related tragedy.

The National Day of Mourning is not only a day to remember and honour those lives lost or injured due to a workplace tragedy but also a day to collectively renew our commitment to fight for the living, improve health and safety in the workplace and prevent further injuries, illnesses and deaths.

Workplace tragedies impact everyone, and we all have a responsibility to do better for workers of today and tomorrow.  Representatives of our communities will renew our pledges to keep workers and workplaces safe in an outdoor ceremony.

Join the Yukon Federation of Labour hosting this conversation with Threads for Life and guest speaker, Russell Claus, joining us all the way from Halifax, Nova Scotia. YFL President, Teresa Acheson, will be your host for this virtual Workers-After-Hours “coffee chat”.

Russell was in his early 20s, working as a tree planter, when he was seriously hurt on a logging road in northern BC. His pelvis was shattered when a truck ran him over. His recovery included multiple reconstructive surgeries. Russell explores the far-reaching effects of his workplace injury on two people who were closest to him. Russell now works in health and safety and lives in Nova Scotia.

Threads of Life brings hope and healing to Canadian families who have been affected by a workplace fatality, life-altering injury or occupational disease. Regional Coordinator, Shari Hinz, will also be there to share more about their national charity connecting thousands of family members across Canada who have been affected by a workplace tragedy.

**REVISED: Delegate Credentials and Resolutions must be submitted by November 21, 2025.

Delegate Entitlement

  • Base Delegation: Each affiliated organization is entitled to two delegates for the first 100 or fewer members.
  • Additional Delegates: An additional delegate is granted for every 200 members or a major fraction thereof beyond the initial 100.
  • Automatic Delegates: All members of the Executive Council and all presidents (or their designated alternate) of affiliated organizations in good standing automatically serve as delegates, in addition to the delegates allocated by membership numbers.
  • Alternate Delegates: Affiliates can register one alternate for each registered delegate.

Resolutions

Submitting bodies must ensure that resolutions meet the following mandatory
requirements.

  • be limited to 150 words; and
  • be formatted in 14-point Arial font in english; and
  • be formatted in either the traditional or clear language format, and include
    the title, originating body and language of origin;
  • not include any special formatting such as boxes or drawings.

The convention is the governing body for the federation, and will be held every 3 years, within 90 days of October 1st.

The Yukon Federation of Labour is chartered by the Canadian Labour Congress. It shall consist of organizations affiliated to, or chartered by, the Canadian Labour
Congress, which became affiliated to this Federation.

The purposes of the Federation are to support the principles of the Canadian Labour Congress while promoting the economic and social well-being of Yukon workers. This includes assisting affiliates with collective bargaining, organizing unorganized workers, and ensuring all workers can benefit from union membership regardless of race, gender, or national origin. The Federation also seeks to secure legislation that safeguards worker rights, promotes free collective bargaining, and protects democratic institutions. It works to promote peace and freedom internationally and supports the use of union-made goods and services. The Federation is committed to protecting the integrity of the labour movement from corruption, preventing organizational conflicts, and maintaining its political independence while encouraging workers to participate fully in civic life.

People are losing their lives to substance use across Canada. Yukon has the third highest rate of apparent opioid toxicity deaths. (CMHA Yukon). These are our neighbours, co-workers, and family.  Imagine if every worksite had Naloxone nasal spray and workers trained to respond in the case of an overdose nearby.

The Yukon Federation of Labour has partnered with Yukon Health & Social Services to bring this training to workers in Whitehorse, Yukon. You will learn how to identify an overdose, how naloxone can save a life, what you can respond to an overdose, and how to administer naloxone through the nose. You will also get a free kit to take with you.

This event has been moved to Yukonstruct.  Plan to arrive by 5:30 pm.
